Uncover Millions of Years of History
Located on the Northern Peninsula of Zanzibar in Nungwi, the Tazari Caves are the largest and most extensive underground formations on the island, ranking among the grandest limestone caves in Tanzania. Spanning an estimated area of over 100km², these caverns boast ceiling heights ranging from 5 to 30 feet.
Though discovered by members of the nearby Benderani village only a few years ago, the caves have existed for millennia. Ancient artifacts like shattered pots, old fireplaces, and deep footprints prove that early humans once called these subterranean spaces home.
Pre-Colonial Dark History
During the Sultan's reign in pre-colonial Zanzibar, Tazari Cave served as a strategic, secret slave hideout during the Arab slave trade. Echoes of this past remain frozen in time, with broken iron chains dating back hundreds of years discovered deep within its recesses.
Geological Formations
The cave's breathtaking interior architecture is shaped completely by nature. Millions of years of mineralized water droplets have created massive, cone-shaped stalactites hanging beautifully from the ceiling, meeting columns of stalagmites growing upward from the cavern floor.
