Zanzibar's Premier Dolphin Sanctuary
Located on the pristine southern shores of Zanzibar, Kizimkazi Village is the island’s most famous destination for spotting wild bottle-nose and humpback dolphins. These intelligent marine creatures frequent the shallow coastal bays for a reliable food supply, to nurse their calves, rest, and socialize.
While a resident colony of bottle-nose dolphins stays here year-round, the shyer humpback dolphins visit erratically. Because dolphins dive deep into the cooler seabed as the morning sun warms up the water, early morning tours are essential. We pick up guests staying in Stone Town at 6:30 AM to maximize our sighting opportunities before multiple boats arrive.
Beyond the waves, Kizimkazi holds deep historical significance. It is home to a protected 12th-century mosque, which stands as the earliest recorded trace of Islam in East Africa, making this excursion a beautiful mix of marine adventure and deep-rooted cultural heritage.
What to Prepare:
- Wear your swimming costumes under clothes
- Bring reliable protective sunblock
- Wear waterproof sandals for boarding dhows
- Patience! Sighting wild animals takes time
