The settlement of Nungwi is located in the northern section of Zanzibar Island. This section of the tour focuses mostly on a cultural village visit to Nungwi Village, sight-seeing, and free time to unwind on the north's white sand beach. The ideal time to visit is early in the morning when the fish market is in full action; depending on the catch the night before, you may see tuna, kingfish, dorado, and other huge fish for sale. Local fishermen (and women) wade out to the coral reef's edge in the mornings to catch a variety of small marine critters such as squid, octopus, puffer fish, and the rare shark ray – their harvest will be auctioned throughout the day at the fish market.
There are a range of intriguing things to see and do at Nungwi, including a natural aquarium that houses endangered sea turtles and a variety of fish. The aquarium is a natural feature formed out of coral bedrock by millions of waves pounding against the shore. With the tides, the water depth rises and lowers, providing a natural environment for its inhabitants.
While admiring the Dhows' white sails, you might be curious as to how these massive vessels are constructed. The Nungwi Boat Yard is an enthralling (excuse the pun) experience where you'll meet the shipyard owner and discover how dhows are produced, from the wood used to the joints and how they're launched.
The boat construction excursion is only available as part of the Nungwi Village Tour. Please remember that the village is the home and workplace of the locals, and we ask that you respect their privacy by asking before taking photographs. You can either rest on the sandy beaches or go swimming in the natural sea at the end of the hike. Lunch and refreshments are served there, and guests can sample local specialties as well as international cuisine.
