Tazari Cave

N/A

Tazari caves are a must-see if you're seeking for adventure on Zanzibar's lovely island. Tazari underground caves are the largest and most extensive caves in Zanzibar, and among the largest limestone caves in Tanzania, and are located on the Northern Peninsular of Zanzibar - Nungwi. The caves, which cover an area of more than 100km2, are thought to have been formed many millennia ago. The cave's heights range from 5 to 30 feet. The amazing caves are just a few kilometers from the ocean's edge, and the caves' apex offers a stunning view of the Atlantic coastline.
The caves were discovered by members of the Benderani village a few years ago, although they are thought to have existed for millions of years.

It is thought that some humans lived in the caverns in ancient times, as evidenced by shattered pots, fireplaces, and foot footprints. The caves are also thought to have been utilized as slave hideouts during the Sultan's reign in the pre-colonial Zanzibar era of the Arab slave trade. Broken chains dating back hundreds of years have been discovered. The cave's interior is made up of huge cone-shaped stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites growing upward from the cave's floor due to water dropping from the stalactites.
