Zanzibar's cultural and historical center is this fascinating and magical town. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it was built out of coral stone. In the year 2000, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stone Town is a bustling city where you'll find a fusion of Arabic, African, Indian, and European cultures coexisting together. You can see mosques, churches, and temples side by side as you travel through the maze of streets too narrow for automobiles to pass.
Your guide will take you on a historical and cultural tour of the city, including the old slave market, the Darajani market, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, and the Sultan's Palace. If agreed upon in advance, the tour also includes a meal at a restaurant or a local home. While the tour is only half a day long, we recommend staying in Stone Town for at least two days to see all of the amazing sights. Forodhani Gardens is well worth a visit, especially at night when it transforms into one of East Africa's best street food markets.
